( the markets are one of the first places that Una finds herself, the first goal that she had in mind: she needed supplies, she needed to know where things were or what she had access to. and she was hungry. the missing time on the enterprise might have skipped over in their memories but not in her stomach and whilst she didn't know what was possible on this planet -- did replicators exist, were there food kiosks or was it simply a market of ingredients for her to cook?

the street food ends up being the first place that she finds, able to smell out the stalls whilst taking note of the shops that she passes. clothing would... be interested based on what was in the windows of shops but nothing that seemed outrageous or impractical. anything else she hadn't yet managed to come across.

she ends up with some sort of sandwich, not entirely certain what it is but she's in a new place and giving it a try, finding herself somewhere to sit to eat it whilst trying to figure out a plan, of where to browse and what she'd feasibly be able to get herself set up with )

( it's later in the day when una ends up in the coffee shop, when it's not yet quite a pub atmosphere but quiet enough that she can enjoy her coffee, can do a little bit of research on the computers before sitting back to enjoy the music and digest what she's learned.

although that doesn't amount to much. it's a strange new world, strange being key, she's not seen a world quite like this before. she'd tried to look up information on magic, on the chips, on the parties involved but she either didn't get much or ended up with more questions than she'd started with. maybe talking to people would be her solution?

the music is at least enjoyable, giving her the opportunity to watch the people that pass through or stay, to seek out any (newly) familiar faces that she's met within her last few days. her next few weeks are going to be a long road )

( it's more than she's come across before, more realistic, more options... just more. she's seen some of the battle and training simulations that are offered, that are used for training and that have developed over the years but having access to something like this for more recreational means... it's much better than the holograms they had (or used to have) for communication purposes. the people seemed real, felt real, and she could smell the sights around her.

she'd opted for a scenery, somewhere to walk, to just look at what this was capable of recreating rather than any of the visual novels or training rooms that she'd seen offered. it makes una wonder whether she'd be able to program it with something of her own, if she could create her own simulation.

for now, she takes a walk, eventually finding somewhere to sit under a tree and enjoy the sights around her. a sight far different from the camp and markets, from how she'd been rescued. and this could easily make you forget what was on the other side )

[He gestures to their pile of goodies, sorting through it as he begins to make separate piles for circuit boards, wiring, and for full devices which can be stripped for parts. Actually building something with it is outside of his expertise, but he can provide a little help.]

We'd been working on one before, or rather B'Elanna had. The first one seemed to overload too quickly and blew up in our faces. So I don't know if that--

[He had been about to say that perhaps it needed a better power source, however he was beaten to it by the stranger who just decided to waltz on over and get into their business.]

..Yeah, that's what I was about to say? [More or less. Jim glances over to Spock as if silently asking if he knows her, before watching as she seems content enough to take up residence at their table, his expression a mixture of amusement and puzzlement.]

Hello...?

[ Spock certainly doesn't mind the intrusion. If this was something they intended to keep private, he would have suggested they do it in private in the first place, however he hasn't yet been acquainted with their new company.

He regards her with a raised eyebrow before gesturing with a sharp tilt of his head to the empty seat at their table. ]

I take it you have experience wiring or programming with such parts?

[ If she'd like to contribute, he's interested in hearing what she has to say. ]

( it doesn't mean anything when kirk gets confused at her interruption, she's not (yet) met him either, but when spock speaks as if he doesn't know her history, something that they've definitely spoken about before? )

You know that I do.

( it earns him a frown and kirk minorly gets ignored for a moment in her confusion at why spock doesn't know her. he's not as young as when she first met him, certainly more world-travelled from how he speaks... )

[Okay, there's definitely something going on here. Jim knows that he's never met her before in his life, but he knows the look that Spock's on the receiving end of right now.

That's the very same look he'd been given on past occasions, when he'd forgotten the name of a former whirlwind romance or not even recognized her, and he was a second away from getting chewed out for it.

So he opts for not saying anything, and drinking his coffee. This is in your hands now, Spock.]

I do not as I have never met you before.

[ He cannot and will not help being the blunt person he has always been. He welcomes input, but he will not pretend to know her or behave coyly about such a thing. ]

However this place seems to have stolen people from different times and even other universes if my hypothesis is correct, therefore I believe that you believe to know me, though perhaps we have not yet met or you know another Spock.

[ A very real possibility considering that until recently, both he and Jim had also known another Spock. ]

( she cuts off abruptly, inwardly groaning. she hates alternate universes. she's had one bad experience with them too many at this point and to now encounter a very different spock?

so, was this simply another universe due to unknown shenanigans or the terran empire?

she hated both options )

The simplest question would be to ask what year it was.

[Jim listens to the conversation between them, frowning at the mention of another Spock. It hadn't occurred to him that someone from that other universe could end up here, it seemed almost impossible, but he also knows that Spock's memory is pretty much perfect. If he does not know her, it's the truth.]

It was 2263. January 4th, to be exact. But Spock's right, neither of us have met you. At least not yet.

Yes. We have been aware of the existence of other timelines for only a short time, but it stands to reason that if there are other versions of us out there--something of which we are certain of--that you may have met a different version of myself.

[ A pause and then to add: ]

Time travel is also a possibility.

( she's quiet for a moment, a little uncomfortably, a slightly extended moment. it wasn't time travel. it was worse )

It was 2259.

( she knows the dots will quickly be connected. for her to know spock and him not know her-- )

How did you learn that other timelines exist?

[Jim glances over towards Spock again, silent for a moment as he figured out the best way to answer. They hadn't properly discussed the topic of Ambassador Spock's passing, and he knows it has to be a complicated subject for Spock. Additionally, he is unsure as to how much he should give away. If it were down to Jim he'd spill the entire story, but temporal complications and all that, especially when they haven't yet discussed her identity.]

Because we've also met a different Spock before.

[His attention shifts back to the woman sitting across the table.]

Not here. [Just to clear that up.] It happened several years ago in our own timeline.

And he'd known another version of Captain Kirk, as well as other members of our crew. It is reasonable to believe that other versions of ourselves and other people we met may exist in any number of combinations.

[ The loss of the Ambassador is still fresh in his mind. Spock can't say he would know Jim as well as he does without the encouragement he'd received to stay in Starfleet, but after so many years together they do feel like more of a matching set than Spock had allowed himself to realize. ]

Captain Kirk, I'm assuming?

( looking back to him, a slightly raised eyebrow. he wasn't the kirk she knew, not like she knew spock, but there was something about him aside from the name. a potential connection? would she have ran into him in the future in her timeline anyway if this hadn't happened? (yes, but she doesn't know that) )

So the other Spock you met could be the Spock I know or another variation from yet another universe. What was the event that caused it? I'm assuming you know how you met him.

James T. Kirk. Captain of the Enterprise.

[ Maybe she will recognize the name, maybe not, but seeing as she knows Spock he has a gut feeling that she at least knows the name of their ship.]

He was pulled into a black hole along with some Romulans. I can't tell you if he's the same Spock you know or not, but the guy was fairly old by then. It had been 2387 when it happened, but the subsequent hole in space-time it created spat some of them back out into the beginning of 2233. That's what caused the divergence in the timeline.

[And now onto what he is most curious about.]

You haven't told us your name, or how you know your Spock. You're Starfleet too, I'm guessing?

[ Spock gives Jim A Look. That is perhaps more information than he would have given her, but none of it is particularly concerning to share right now. ]

The elder Spock and I met shortly after the destruction of our Vulcan. That is one of the significant differences between our own timeline and the one he had come from.

( she almost interrupts kirk when he nentions enterprise, stopping herself, hearing the rest of him out. and then spock drops the second bomb. vulcan.

she doesn't know yet what to do with that piece, aside from offer sympathies for what had happened. but somehow she can't yet form those words )

What happened to Captain Pike?

( she's fearing the worst, that he's dead, that somehow the fate he was supposed to face in her timeline had been altered and made worse )

[Jim's attitude goes through a visible shift the moment Pike is mentioned. The conversation before had been filled with curiosity and even a little amusement, yet now.. not so much. The faint smile fades away, replaced with an expression of unease.

It may have been several years, but Pike's death still weighed heavy on him.]

If you're wondering why he's no longer the Captain, he got promoted to Admiral. After that, well..

[He pauses, giving Spock A Look in return. Jim knows he's already said far more than he probably should, about everything. But if the roles were reversed here, he would want to know. Bad news and regulations be damned.]

[ For the briefest moment, there is a flash of something in Spock's face. He can't forget the way it felt to feel Admiral Pike's life slip away. He will never forget it as long as he lives and the memory of the man he'd served under and admired is not one he wants to let go of no matter how much it hurts and frightens him.

When he speaks, it's only after he's regained that composure, his voice still harsh enough to betray that his emotions are not as in check as he might prefer them to be. ]

He was killed by Khan Noonien-Singh.

( that sinking feeling starts at jim's words, the little cliffhanger where all she can assume that follows it is he's dead. una knows that chris is playing with limited time after what he experienced on boreth but he doesn't die there... just a fate that really isn't much better than it.

but then spock confirms it, her heart sinking lower. and then she goes cold, surprise entirely evident in her expression, stronger than the pain she feels... and she wonders maybe if she feels a little sick.

khan noonien-singh? that wasn't right, wasn't what was supposed to happen to him-- but maybe the future she knew for chris had changed because of the other changes in this timeline, the destruction of vulcan... surely that would have set off a chain of other events. including chris being killed by her best friend's homicidal generically engineered ancestor. the reason why she couldn't legally join starfleet.

that was all entirely a mess. she didn't say anything at first, trying to process it, to pull some of herself back together to be able to respond. una knows that it'll hit her fully later, will only let herself really feel it when she's alone. so for now she forces some neutrality back into her expression, nodding to them )

Thank you for telling me.

( even if it's quite possibly the worst thing that she's ever heard and she wishes she didn't know. but the truth is better than the two tiptoeing around her )

I serve with Captain Pike. Where I'm from he's still the Captain of the Enterprise. I'm his first officer, Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley. Call me Number One.

( would they have said anything different if they knew who she was first? even if she's glad they didn't hold back )

[Khan Noonien-Singh. There's a name he hadn't thought about in a while, intentionally so. Jim's hands curl up into tight balls as he leans back in his seat, the connected memories flowing back to him.

The attack on Starfleet HQ, and Admiral Pike's death. Right after some rather poor behavior on his part too. He knew how much Pike had been disappointed in him, and he never got a chance to prove that he could do better.

And then came Kronos, the betrayal by Marcus, their entire ship and crew almost being annihilated and it would have been his fault. All because of Khan, who repaid the saving of his life by attempting to blast them out of the sky. Which would have worked, if not for... well.

Jim lefts out a soft sigh. To think that he actually felt sorry for Khan at some point, however brief. He likes to tell himself that icing him up again was the better choice, but honestly? He deserved to be taken out by a mass torpedoes.

But then Una says he is still the Captain, and it brings the beginnings of a smile back to his face, even though there is a sadness behind it. To know that despite all that he is still out there, somewhere. Alive.]

Christopher Pike was an exemplary Captain, and a great man. I have no doubt that those qualities carried over between our realities.

[ For a moment, Spock can only nod in agreement. He'd been proud to serve under Pike and he'd been proud of Pike's actions in the face of Nero. The man had seen something in both Spock and Jim that other male figures in their lives hadn't. His loss had felt... shattering. ]

I only served under Admiral Pike as his first officer briefly before he was promoted, but in that time he served the values of Starfleet and cared for his crew in an exemplary manner. He saved many lives and assisted in the evacuation of as much of the population of Vulcan as he was able in that time, including my own father.

( a slight smile forms at the warmth that both of them share for her captain, that even though they don't know each other they all know one common thing: a great man and captain and his ship )

He is that. ( and since she knows him most, has known him the longest, it wouldn't be right if she didn't add her own to it, to share for them a little more of who christopher pike is, something they seem to only have briefly seen )

I've been his first officer for nine years and served with him when he was first officer, all on the Enterprise. He's a good man, the best of Starfleet... the person you'd want there if you were in trouble.

( something that una will find out for herself all too soon but she's got plenty of other observed experiences to fall back on )

If you both now are Captain and first officer of the Enterprise... it explains why you don't know me.

( whatever happened, whatever changed the timeline, destroyed vulcan, killed pike... she was never first officer of the enterprise. was she even starfleet? or alive? she'd rather not have that answered )

I can believe it. I wouldn't be where I was today without him. The guy saved my ass countless times.

[Not always from physical danger, but Pike's actions sent Jim's life on a trajectory that he may not have fulfilled otherwise. Despite the difficulty and sadness of the topic, his eyes light up hearing the stranger talk about her own Captain Pike, and the many, many years they've served together. It sounds as though they have been through a lot together.

If she is indeed from the same reality as Ambassador Spock, then Jim knows that eventually he and Spock take the mantles of Captain and First Officer. He can only hope that Pike's fate ends up being a better one.]

Can't say I recognize you, or the name I'm afraid. But it isn't as though I knew to look out for it, either.

[ Spock's memory is exemplary and he is sure he has not met a version of this woman unless she had used a different name, however she is a Starfleet officer and that is a welcome companion here. ]

It is possible that if you exist in our timeline that you serve on another ship or that you may not have joined Starfleet, however in the here and now it is clear we have something and perhaps someone in common. It is only logical that we should work together and share our knowledge and resources.

Well, I can look forward to getting to know you both through this.

( through whatever tasks they combined efforts on, through the missions... they had plenty of time it seemed )

Though I'll have to remember that for all I know of Spock you don't have the same experiences of the Enterprise as I do, perhaps even some different interests.

( she'd have to remember that he wasn't really her spock )

It's up to the three of us to make a good Starfleet impression on this place, after all. That gives us plenty of time to get to know one other.

[How often do you get to talk to someone from an alternate reality? Besides, if a Christopher Pike would endorse her that sounds like a good enough reason as any to put in a little faith.

Jim is curious to know if there are any differences between the two Spocks, if they really do have different hobbies or behave differently, but refrains from asking (for now), instead letting Spock take point on that particular conversation as he begins to fiddle with their pile of circuitry once more.]
