✩ the open markets
( the markets are one of the first places that Una finds herself, the first goal that she had in mind: she needed supplies, she needed to know where things were or what she had access to. and she was hungry. the missing time on the enterprise might have skipped over in their memories but not in her stomach and whilst she didn't know what was possible on this planet -- did replicators exist, were there food kiosks or was it simply a market of ingredients for her to cook?

the street food ends up being the first place that she finds, able to smell out the stalls whilst taking note of the shops that she passes. clothing would... be interested based on what was in the windows of shops but nothing that seemed outrageous or impractical. anything else she hadn't yet managed to come across.

she ends up with some sort of sandwich, not entirely certain what it is but she's in a new place and giving it a try, finding herself somewhere to sit to eat it whilst trying to figure out a plan, of where to browse and what she'd feasibly be able to get herself set up with )

( it's later in the day when una ends up in the coffee shop, when it's not yet quite a pub atmosphere but quiet enough that she can enjoy her coffee, can do a little bit of research on the computers before sitting back to enjoy the music and digest what she's learned.

although that doesn't amount to much. it's a strange new world, strange being key, she's not seen a world quite like this before. she'd tried to look up information on magic, on the chips, on the parties involved but she either didn't get much or ended up with more questions than she'd started with. maybe talking to people would be her solution?

the music is at least enjoyable, giving her the opportunity to watch the people that pass through or stay, to seek out any (newly) familiar faces that she's met within her last few days. her next few weeks are going to be a long road )

( it's more than she's come across before, more realistic, more options... just more. she's seen some of the battle and training simulations that are offered, that are used for training and that have developed over the years but having access to something like this for more recreational means... it's much better than the holograms they had (or used to have) for communication purposes. the people seemed real, felt real, and she could smell the sights around her.

she'd opted for a scenery, somewhere to walk, to just look at what this was capable of recreating rather than any of the visual novels or training rooms that she'd seen offered. it makes una wonder whether she'd be able to program it with something of her own, if she could create her own simulation.

for now, she takes a walk, eventually finding somewhere to sit under a tree and enjoy the sights around her. a sight far different from the camp and markets, from how she'd been rescued. and this could easily make you forget what was on the other side )

other places that una would likely to be include the magic markets [curiosity and confusion], xin night market and vr [other scenarios]. i'd also love to do some mini missions but would like to discuss them first?

( she passes her hand from one hand to the other, it hot despite the paper covering it, not yet cooled enough to comfortably hold nor even yet eat )

[A voice draws him from his thoughts and he stops mid-scribble to see who had disturbed the silence.]

Well I wouldn't want a good sandwich to land on the floor and go to waste. [He motions to the seat, pulling his notebook back towards him and his own plate of something that look like dumplings.] Better for it to fall on the table.

I'm hoping I don't drop it at all.

( but she's grateful for the shared table anyway )

How is the food?

( before she bites her sandwich. good or disappointment waiting to happen? )

Depends on the stall. [He pushes his notebook towards her and it looks like there's a very meticulous set of notes about which food stalls he's tried and the ones that he'd go back to versus other ones he'd avoid.]

The dumplings though - delicious. What's the verdict on your sandwich?

( she takes a bit, a slight tilt of her head as she thinks it over )

Mildly questionable. Edible, probably not something I'd order again.

( needs more spice and less strange meats )

But I've had worse new experiences.

[He hands her the pen he'd been using motioning to the notebook. He'd do it but he's digging into his dumplings before they get cold.]

Feel free to add it to the list. I don't want waste my time with bad food.

[He'd lived too long eating questionable combinations of food but at the very least he was open to exploring.]

Are you new?

( the sandwich goes down for a minute, una looking over the list before adding the mystery meat sandwich to it. if only she knew the name of it )

Yeah. I was rescued a few days ago.

( he's clearly been here long enough to have a list of food, though unless her information was wrong it hadn't sounded like this had been going on for too long )

I heard about the mission.

[The Doctor notes the mystery meat entry and when the notebook and the pen are back in front of him he draws a little emoji that looks rather angry along with a thumbs down beside it.]

Heard about the mission, were rescued from the facility, or participated in it?

[No point beating around the bush. He had been a part of it and he was still smarting from how much of a headache it had been for him saddled with two sassy mission partners.]

I heard about it after I was rescued. I don't know if it's the same place that you were.

( though there were very few people around when obi-wan got her out. and honestly, that felt like a lucky encounter )

It sounded like it could easily have had a different outcome.

It might have been. They sent us out several times - the Sylphid never rest. [It's said very dryly.] Good to see you made it out in one piece though.

How are you adjusting?

[Really it's a nicer way to ask if she's got any culture shock and to gauge what kind of universe she came from before this.]

It's not the strangest situation I've been in.

( the life of a space explorer, right? )

I've been to other planets before, seen species at conflict. The methods used are different, less conventional but... parts are recognisable.

( it's when you get to what is weird about it that feels strange. for her )

[His interest definitely seems to be piqued though when she says she’s used to it.]

That’s saying something if this isn’t the strangest you’ve been pulled into. What parts about your space travel are similar to this?

It'd take me a while to go through everywhere I've been.

( and whether or not this is her world, her world's rules she's still hanging fast by her orders. at least for the parts of her missions that are pretty classified on clearance )

But a lot of the time war and conflict end up looking the same.

( no matter how it starts it always goes the same way: a lot of violence and death )

Well we've got nothing but time here. [He says it sarcastically of course. He's just reminded every day how awful it is being stuck somewhere without his TARDIS.

He can't help but give her a tight lipped smile.]

I get the feeling this might end the same way. Neither side seems willing to sit down and talk - in other words, it's the same in this universe as it is in both of ours I suspect.

Have we tried doing that?

( una doesn't know whether it would help given that they were the kidnapped parties, brought here by one side, taken over to the other and seemingly now fighting for them )

We're currently fighting a war for being brought into it, I've only heard one side of it.

( not saying that it's untrue but she's new and still getting all of the information )

I don't know. I doubt it. The Sylphid have taken over much of the known universe here. This is one of the last hold outs.

[As loathe as he is to say it, conversation sounds like a pipe dream when it comes to the mess they've all been pulled into.]

I had my suspicions too but the Witches seem to be telling the truth from what we've seen at their facilities.

That's something promising.

( and there'd certainly been a lot of unrest and mistrust in the facility that una had been rescued from )

Wars without any conversation never go well... or really have an ending.

Unfortunate for us then. We're here until we can get them out of this war unless we can reverse engineer the devices and magic used to bring us here.

[ He seems to recall she's a fellow space traveller of some sort but it wasn't apparent off the get go. ]

That's not a question I know how to answer.

( even though she's familiar with various other universes it doesn't mean she knows how to describe her own )

There are aspects of it I could describe. [ Apparently there's plenty of people here from some universe that have a version of Earth. But there are others who hadn't ever heard of it at all.

Maybe that was the best softball approach to figure it out. ]

Does an Earth exist in yours?

There's an Earth, I've been there.

( ... maybe just planets are thinking too small. or too big, would she have to list every planet she knows? what if he knew a planet but it existed in her world and they just hadn't charted it yet? )

What year is it?

( safe, right? )

[ ...Maybe he had to rethink this question. If she couldn't name her universe then it wouldn't matter what he told her his universe was called. ]

Also a tricky question. Last I was on Earth it was...2017? Maybe? Ish. Time travel doesn't usually lend to keeping track of the year.

[ And he's supposed to be a Time Lord? Christ. ]

( she frowns slightly, considering the information )

Do you time travel purposely?

Depends on whether or not you consider exploration and general adventure a purpose.

If yes, then yes. If no, then you can just call me an idiot with a blue box. [ He pauses, something akin to loss and annoyance flickering in his gaze. ] Or rather, without one.

Is time travel something that exists in your universe?

It's possible though not done.

( not usually. she'd been involved in one instance for a very specific reason. how many other stories had there been that had been locked away as classified after? she hoped not many, it was messy )

There seems like other ways to explore.
