Mission Log #4

How It Works

Welcome to the fourth mission log in Annexed!

How Mission Logs Work: There will generally be two main missions per month, with different focuses tailored to different skillsets (usually stealth vs. fighting, though other skillsets will be tapped on). Each mission will be posted in phases, with a prompt for the start of each phase. The plotting post will give you a rundown of what the missions are, how they might go, and what might be discovered. Characters may partake in whichever pat of the operation they choose, whether it's a large prominent part or a more supporting role. Characters may participate in both missions, and as many phases as they wish.

Mod Guidance: Players may request occasional scene-setting when they hit a point where they're unsure what might happen next in a log or what their characters might encounter. There will be a "Mod Guidance" comment that players can reply to in order to request this kind of scene-setting.

Completion of Missions: There will be a submissions comment for anyone who's threaded out a portion of the mission. Once a thread has been completed at least halfway, please submit your character's progress and plans for the thread to the submissions thread. These submissions are the main way that the mod will decide how the mission went in the next month's wrap-up post, so they are very important!

Plotting Post: Here!

The Invasion

Several months ago, there was a mission to deliver supplies to an endangered outpost of the Witches Camp. This outpost is called the Northeastern Front, and is in a particularly highly disputed piece of territory. There are constant raids and espionage by the Sylphid, who are trying to claim the area for settlement and to provide a much smoother route of invasion for the Witches Camp itself.

Just this morning, a scout from the Northeastern Front stumbled into the Witches Camp, dehydrated and starving, on foot, to report that the outpost has been completely taken over by the Sylphid, who hit with a surprise attack in the middle of the night. The scout reports that the outpost's inhabitants have been shut into locked cages and are being held without food or water, and that the Sylphid are occupying the camp completely.

The Witch is proposing a mission to retake the Northeastern Front. If this outpost remains taken by the Sylphid, a full on invasion of the Witches Camp can't be far behind, not with such a pivotal location taken over.

The Witch will be calling a general meeting at the Command Center where she will explain the situation and the proposed missions to stop it.

Mission A: Scouting the Scene

Mission Appropriateness: Chipped or Stripped
Mission Focus: recon, stealth

This mission will focus on recon and stealth. Characters will travel on hover-ATVs to the Northeastern Front, where they will park in the jungle outside of the range of scouting by the Sylphid, and approach on foot. They will approach and learn the rounds of the Sylphid guards as well as release prisoners from the cages and take them out of the outpost to be rehydrated and fed.

PHASE I: RECON

The first phase of the mission involves the trip to the Northeastern Front, which is a trial unto itself, and working out the rounds of the Sylphid guards that are patrolling around the edges of the city. The biggest challenge of this phase will be getting to the Northeastern Front and parking at the rendezvous location outside the outpost, considering the terrain of the jungle and its inhabitants.

The Northeastern Front is to the northeast of the Witches Camp, nestled in the jungle just at the edge of The Troop. The outpost has been the subject of constant Sylphid attack and espionage since it was founded, but is very necessary for keeping track of Sylphid movements in the area, which is a highly disputed piece of territory. There have been several battles in the area previously, and it is only barely held by the Witches at this time. The trip to the outpost is hazardous, a rough-hewn barely-cleared path that winds through the jungle, and which must be navigated with great care. There are several hazards along the path.

Jungle Terrain: The path is mostly overgrown and very twisting, which is done on purpose to camouflage the path in the jungle. Only those who have been instructed on how to follow the path can follow it with any kind of confidence or ease. There are shrubs, tree roots, and other natural barriers that threaten anyone who travels the path too carelessly.

Wild Animals: There are a great deal of wild animals, many of them oversized, that will be both familiar and unfamiliar to people from Earth. There are large sabretooth cats, snakes and insects that have grown to the size of small buildings, wild boars, oversize deer that can take out a hover-ATV with their antlers and hooves, slime monsters, venomous and carnivorous plants, and many others. Be creative and come up with whatever monsters you like!

Sylphid Agents: The area is also swarming with Sylphid agents - scouts and hunting parties searching out the path itself and threatening the rendezvous point. Avoid these parties, or take them on, either is completely acceptable.

Magical and Mechanical Traps: Some of the Sylphid scouting parties have found portions of the path from the Witches Camp to the Northeastern Front, though they haven't yet found the rendezvous point yet. These scouting parties have set up various traps of both magical and mechanical types. Some of these traps can be deadly - pits with spikes at the bottom, flying logs, magical tripwires that disintegrate parts of the people caught in them. Again, be creative and feel free to come up with traps of your own.

Once the group has made its way to the rendezvous point, they will sneak up to the Northeastern Front and take their places in the jungle surrounding it, well-camouflaged with gear they've carried on their hover-ATVs such as ghillie suits, and watch the rounds of the guards to get a good idea of the best points of entry. These should be marked on a map of the area that will be provided for download on their personal devices.

PHASE II: INFILTRATION

Once they have divined the pattern of rounds that are run by the Sylphid guards, the recon and infiltration crew will be tasked with sneaking around the camp and mapping it out, as the Sylphid have rearranged it after taking it over. This includes the movements of the people inside and the location of the cages that the previous residents of the outpost are being held in and the movements of the guards that are keeping watch over them.

There are some notable locations within the camp:

Mess Hall: Where the Sylphid are being fed and where they congregate when not on duty. The mess hall serves meals but also functions as a sort of bar and communal hanging out location with a few pub-style games like darts and a pool table. Here is where you'll find a large amount of the Sylphid at any given time. Best mapped but otherwise avoided.

Armory: Where the Sylphid go to collect body armor and weapons. The best place to get armed in the outpost. There's less of a congregation of Sylphid here, but the ones that are seem to be quite ready for a scrap. Another place mapped but otherwise avoided, unless you want to try to steal their weapons out from under them - a dangerous idea.

Tents: The bulk of the outpost is made up of tents that each house four Sylphid. These were taken wholesale from the previous occupants of the camp and redistributed to Sylphid, without being moved. In the area of the camp that's just tents for housing Sylphid, the maps as they are still apply.

Cages: Brought in by the Sylphid and with rebels packed into them like sardines, the cages are kept at the 'back' of the camp, in a relatively dark area that's close to the jungle. There are consistently 6 guards on duty, all of which will need to be subdued before any liberation of the rebels within can occur. Each cage holds about 8 rebels, and there are 12 cages in total. The cages are each solid metal and under the influence of an anti-magic spell, one per cage, intended to keep the inhabitants of the cage from doing magic and rendering any spells to unlock the cages useless. The cages will have to be opened using lockpicks or brute force, with saws that will make quick work of the locks having been provided by the rebels for this mission.

PHASE III: LIBERATION

The final phase of the first mission will focus on liberating the rebel residents of the Northeastern Front from the cages they've been imprisoned in. This sounds simpler than it is, considering this phase of the mission is meant to be as stealthy as the previous phases, hopefully retaining the element of surprise for the takeover battle that is to follow.

Characters who have been watching the camp will have found that the guards watch the prisoners for a shift of 6 hours before being relieved by a new wave of guards, and that other than these guards, there isn't much attention paid to the cages. The Sylphid are quite confident that the inhabitants are too hungry, thirsty, and magic-blocked to get out of the cages, and that the guards watching them will catch any dangerous business before it happens.

The best bet would be to silence and take out all the guards as quickly as possible after they start a new shift, preferably at night. Under the cover of darkness, these infiltrators can then open the locks as quietly as possible and free the prisoners, taking them back to the rendezvous location. The prisoners will be quite sick from dehydration, hunger, and abuse, but will recover quickly once given rations and water, and be ready to aid in the battle to retake their home. The people of the Northeastern Front are very hardy people, who take pride in maintaining their independence and their hold on this dangerous and highly-contested piece of land - they do not take kindly to being taken over, overpowered, and locked up. They'll have a lot to prove to themselves and, in their minds, to The Witch, once freed.

Try to make the liberation quick, though, because once the prisoners are released, there is only the remainder of that guard group's shift before the next shift arrives and discovers that the prisoners are missing!

Mission B: The Battle

Mission Appropriateness: Chipped or Stripped
Mission Focus: open battle

This mission will focus on open battle to take back the Northeastern Front. Once the prisoners have been removed and taken to safety, a force will approach the outpost on hover-ATV and suit up in body armor and arm themselves with weapons to retake the outpost. This will be a knock-down drag-out battle, straight up, with characters routing and taking down Sylphid, capturing prisoners for interrogation, and trying not to destroy the infrastructure of the camp.

PHASE I: ASSEMBLY

Before the final battle to retake the Northeastern Front, the troops must gather at the rendezvous point for briefing, to help with reviving the prisoners who've been freed from the cages, and to generally get on the same page for a plan of attack. The Witch herself will be at the rendezvous point, ready to give an empowering speech and to personally participate in the battle, wielding powerful magic and carrying a magitech sword that she's very skilled at using.

Characters who are attending for battle will face the same dangers coming to the rendezvous point that the first crew faced, with the jungle terrain, animals, Sylphid scouts, and other dangers applying just as much as it did for the stealth group. Once they reach the rendezvous point, they will find that it's set up almost like a mini-camp, complete with patrolling guards and a tent where they can pick up a bowl of mushroom and rabbit stew to fortify themselves before battle. While they eat, they can look at a map that's been set up in the tent with a cohesive and well-scouted layout of the camp. It's recommended that people coming in to participate in the battle familiarize themselves with the map and know where everything is located within the Northeastern Front.

The battle will be beginning anywhere from 5 hours or less after the liberation of the prisoners, and this time can be spent helping revive prisoners, memorizing the map, making plans with fellow rebels, and coordinating with The Witch and her people. There will also be a round table discussion of the battle's plan of action, so if you have a good plan, this will be the time to speak up and make yourself heard.

PHASE II - INVASION

Before the opportunity arises for the Sylphid to raise an alarm, the group ready to carry out the attack on the Northeastern Front will sneak their way through the jungle to the clearing and descend upon the enemy all at once, from all sides.

This is to be a relatively straightforward attack, and between the new extrauniversal arrivals and the NPC rebels, there should be enough people to be on an equal playing field with the Sylphid in the area. This will be a knock-down drag-out fight, with both sides going hard and fast, sword against sword, magic against magic, and skill against skill. Both sides will be heavily armed and wearing body armor and will be pretty evenly matched.

About halfway through the battle, however, anyone may find the Sylphid commander in the mess hall tent with the radio, asking for backup. Before anyone has a chance to stop her, unfortunately, there will be a call sent out for backup from Zephyr. But realistically, how could they get here with any semblance of time to spare, right? Right?

PHASE III - SURVIVAL & SUCCESS

Just as the tide of battle is starting to turn in favor of the rebels, the backup from Zephyr arrives in the form of three powerful mages with their equally powerful familiars, arriving via a teleportation spell.

These mages are the most powerful the Sylphid have in their arsenal and won't be easy to win against. The mages and their familiars are as follows:

Silhara and Dragon: Silhara is the name of the first mage to arrive. She is possessed of powerful fire magic, including fireballs, flmespouts, and the ability to manipulate fire, and has a dragon as a familiar. The dragon has stone skin, almost impossible to penetrate and powerful fire breath, as well as vicious fangs and claws. The dragon stands approximately 12 feet tall and is about 20 feet long from the tip of the tail to the snout. The dragon does have one weak spot - a place at the base of the throat where the plates of the stone skin overlay each other, which must be hit with a precise cutting blow while the dragon is inhaling in preparation to unleash its fire breath.

Dark'ness and Hydra: Dark'ness is the name of the second mage to arrive. They are possessed of powerful shadow magic, including the ability to take control of a person via controlling their shadow, the creation of complete darkness, and they have a hydra as a familiar. The hydra has 4 heads and with each head that is cut off, two more will grow from the neck, with each head bearing vicious poison-dripping fangs. The hydra stands at approximately 10 feet tall and is about 25 feet long from the tip of the longest snout to the end of the tail. The hydra does have a weak spot - the heart, which must be pierced in order to kill the thing, or all of the heads being beheaded at once so no heads remain.

Dendrite and Chimera: Dendrite is the name of the third mage to arrive. He is possessed of a type of magic that hits people in their nervous systems, allowing him to cause immeasurable pain without touching someone or to completely immobilize someone with a timed strike of his fists against sensitive parts of the person, and he has a chimera as familiar. The chimera has the heads of both a lion and a goat protruding from the large catlike body, and a snake for a tail. It has powerful headbutting abilities with the goat's head and vicious fangs in the lion's head, along with powerful claws and a venomous bite from the tail. The chimera stands at about 8 feet tall and is about 14 feet long from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail. The chimera does have a weak spot - it is exceptionally weak to beheading, and will lose control and go berserk if either head is removed, completely losing control and refusing to obey its master's commands, though a berserk chimera is a very powerful thing. Best to remove both heads at once if possible.

Once these three mages have been defeated, the tide of battle will turn, and the remaining Sylphid will flee the camp, leaving it to be taken over by the rebels and returned to normal.

"Strriiike!" One would think this boy would have gotten a handle on sports terms by now.

Donatello touches down by Codi, spinning his bo as the rotors of his battle shell fold in. "Completely unplanned, I assure you, but I will concur, my timing is perfect," he quips with a smug grin. He glances towards where the mage and his pet went, knowing this is probably far from over.

"He went right for you, didn't he? What did you even do?"

Close enough. Codi pops back to her feet and jogs over to the turtle in several long strides, feeling reasonably confident in Donatello's ability to keep her hide safe if she sticks near him.

"Might've blown up a building," she admits brightly. Her own attention turns back to Dendrite; in spite of how the impact knocked him back several dozen feet, the mage is upright with hands raised, not bothering to nurse his bloodied nose. The stance is distinctly martial. Specialized combat caster, perhaps?

Either way, he's no longer the immediate threat - his pet is. The chimera superimposes itself between them and gallops in for a charge, horned head lowered at the one that struck its master. Suddenly Codi doesn't feel so safe being near Donatello anymore. "Split!" she cries out, changing course and ducking to the side.

"Oh, very nice! And kind of funny considering that these guys are the ones that invaded first, that they're the ones getting mad?" That's an interesting stance the mage takes though. Hand-to-hand? At least he's better dealing with a melee combatant than someone just firing off shots with a gun!

Donatello's grin wavers as the chimera takes its position. It's...a lot bigger now that he's closer.

"Aah!" he yelps, throwing himself to the other side as the thing comes charging.

Both of them narrowly dodge out of the way of the chimera's charge. Codi can feel the wind whistle past her back as it passes, even. Way too close. She rolls off the ground, catching a quick look at Dendrite pointing at her and muttering something under his breath. Codi points back at him for Donatello's benefit.

"Can you--!" Whatever spell the mage was casting activates. There's no warning - just pain, white-hot, spearing through the center of her chest like an arrow piercing her clean through the sternum. Codi shrieks in agony and staggers backwards, barely able to stand upright, let alone keep her thoughts in order.

"Codi!"

Donatello had rolled to his feet, keeping an eye out for the chimera when that scream practically cuts through him. He looks back towards Codi and then at the mage. What'd he even do?? The turtle hadn't heard anything by way of explosions or anything thrown in their direction.

"Hey pal, don't you know it's not nice picking on unarmed people?!" he shouts, activating his battle shell's rotors again to zip closer to Codi.

He lifts his staff almost the way a casting mage would, except instead of fireballs or something, what traces in the air around him are small missiles, outlines of them. He sends them forth with a spin and point of his staff, streaking fuchsia light as they rocket towards Dendrite.

Dendrite laughs openly - something about 'always take out the spellcaster first' - before Donatello's counterattack forces him to duck. The movement isn't nearly enough to dodge. Thankfully for Dendrite, his chimera is faster, swooping in to block the missiles with its side. It seems to take special care to avoid having either of its heads struck in the process.

Codi, meanwhile, is...not managing. She's slumped to a knee, clutching at her chest and gasping for air as the magic-induced pain continues to radiate through her body. But even through the agony clouding her thoughts, Codi can hazily perceive what's happening to her. She knows who is responsible. And the fact that he's reduced her to this state, makes her absolutely furious.

Mana wells up in her lungs. "You...slimy...mother--!" But another pang of pain cuts her off with a hiss, and Vicious Mockery fizzles in her throat.

Dendrite, oblivious or otherwise impassive to her suffering, vaults over his familiar to try and punch Donatello in the throat.

"Oh cursed mythological beast shield!" Donatello sputters, actually waving a fist. Hmm. An interesting observation regarding its heads, although not one he can consider for very long as suddenly Dendrite is leaping quite literally back into the picture.

The turtle grabs his staff with both hands, giving it a vicious twist to catch the mage's flying fist and knock it off target. He's still oblivious to what exactly the guy is capable of, but a melee fighter, he's sure he can handle otherwise! Continuing his movement, Donnie reverses the half-circling of his staff before jerking the end of it upwards to try catching Dendrite's chin, and if he's successful, follow up with the other end coming around to the mage's gut.

[personal profile] maskedtyrant 2023-02-21 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Somewhere through combat training, anger, and sheer stubbornness, Codi manages to finally shake off the pain enough to focus again, panting as she staggers back to her feet. She watches Dendrite and Donatello face off out of the corner of her eye; the two are cleanly matched martial fighters from the looks of things, with Dendrite easily recovering from the turtle's deflection to block, block, parry with his fingers aimed to jab him in the sensitive front of his shoulder.

Perhaps her assessment that the two-on-one fight was unfair wasn't accurate. Honestly, it needs to be a three-on-one - or maybe a two-on-one favoring her and Donatello. Having that chimera as a meat shield and periodic distraction puts them at a huge disadvantage, and as she sizes the beast up now, currently swiping at another group of Witches that are getting too close, Codi knows she can't take that on herself. They have to focus one of them down.

Dendrite is probably the better of the two to do that with; she has no idea what the fuck to do about a chimera.

In the middle of his spar with Donatello, there's a sudden thwack and the mage shifts awkwardly forward as the assault rifle that Codi Catapulted into the back of his head impacts. She lunges forward to pick it up on the rebound. "Over here, asshole!" Codi shouts, shouldering the gun.
purplexing: (you made me feelings)

[personal profile] purplexing 2023-02-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Donatello's taken notice of the particular maneuvering of this mage as he continues to fend off. No punches, just precisely aimed fingers- pressure points? No, some other style? But he's a mage-

"Aagh!" The turtle staggers back at Dendrite's touch- no, not pressure points, stupid magic! His arm feels like it's on fire and then just suddenly goes numb. Oh, so that's what he's been trying to do, he thinks, simultaneously realizing this is Very Bad.

His grasp lost on his staff by one hand, he knows this isn't going to work well in his favor, and now he's forced on the defensive. -which is a good thing that Codi recovers and comes in. But she's not exactly a frontline fighter.

What might sound like a bunch of gibberish spills from his mouth as he latches onto that spark of anger at the mage. An equation... a formula? He points his staff and this time it is magic he's casting. "Eat my Exothermic Reaction!" he shouts, flames bursting up around Dendrite.

...why yes, that is Hellish Rebuke in Donnie language. That Steven has equated in some relatable way has worked wonders for him.
maskedtyrant: (Confident | the Tyrant)

[personal profile] maskedtyrant 2023-02-23 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever works, frankly - Codi can't judge too harshly when she sees results. Dendrite is too close in to dodge the flames, yelling in pain and fury as they sear his clothes and flesh and the air fills with the scent of burning hair. Even his retaliatory strike is clumsy, as he's apparently blinded by the fire's light still flashing in his eyes.

All the better for Codi waiting behind him. There's a sharp rapport of gunfire and a dozen bullets slam into Dendrite's back. Interestingly, the mage doesn't instantly keel over dead; a thin film of translucent blue seems to dull each strike, resulting in a slew of shallow wounds across his shoulders rather than piercing him clean through. Codi scowls while she hastily repositions. Mage Armor! Really need to learn that one.

At least it's something. Dendrite is thoroughly staggered, bleeding, and his chimera is--

--On its way, abandoning the flank to charge in with an infuriated roar. "Incoming!" Codi shouts.

Yesssssss! Oh, there's no denying that satisfaction of seeing his first spell nail his target. Donatello's grin is just a bit manic, even as he jerks back to avoid the near-wild outlash from Dendrite.

He throws himself to the side and into a tumble as Codi lets loose with her acquired weapon upon the enemy mage. His own expression might mirror hers then as he draws the same conclusion, having had Steven cast that same spell on him just prior to the battle. Both handy and annoying, depending on the perspective. Donatello had neglected to think that it could be used by their opponents.

The roar from the chimera makes Codi's warning almost pointless, but Donnie doesn't linger as he hears it rushing them. He makes a leap, his battle shell's rotors unfolding to keep him traveling upwards.

"Oh, this thing's got to go!" The turtle braces his staff over his shoulder, holding it in his left hand almost like he's aiming a rifle. Not ideal when he's only got one arm functional, but that's where his mystic tech comes in again, those same vibrant neon line tracing in the air to fill in the spaces that had only been a suggestion of imagination just before. Apparently Donnie's got a very destructive imagination. His bazooka fires a shell at the chimera's face as it turns, the lines of his weapon wavering once the thing flies. He's starting to feel the drain, something he's anticipated but hasn't really been able to test his limits on.

This is exactly the kind of situation Codi was hoping to avoid. Taking Dendrite out would have probably made his familiar unsummon itself, or at least make it less capable at fighting them without its master to direct it or for it to focus on. But here it is, skidding to a halt behind the quickly recovering Dendrite. Its two front heads look up at the flying turtle, but the snake locks onto Codi as the closer, more available target.

Crap. Codi takes a step back and aims her gun again.

Then Donatello beats her at her own game. She's not entirely sure what kind of magic he's using to cast this image, and at first that's all she thinks it is - an illusion meant to force the pair to scatter so that they could attempt to pick them off again. She'd missed his first missile strike through the lingering effects of the Power Word. Now, watching the heavy ordinance strike the chimera's goat head and flash bright, feeling the resulting shockwave ripple through her and blow back what's left of untrampled grass, Codi is quickly reassessing.

At the end of it, the chimera is still left standing...but with only its lion head and snake-headed tail remaining. Something wild gleams in its eyes. This is the only warning before it spins, lunging at Dendrite and pinning him to the ground in an instant.

Well. She'll take that. Codi lowers her gun and jogs out of the way of the struggling pair, watching Dendrite punch and his chimera yowl in fury and pain with a gleeful smile on her face.

Satisfied that this battle is probably done, Codi turns her attention to Donatello. "What the hell was that?!" she laughs. "That was amazing!"

Sometimes you get a little more than you bargained for, but Donatello can't say it isn't effective. One might say the resulting is more than effective, really. Kinda gross, but the two had been asking for it so far as he's concerned.

"Ha-ha!" he laughs as he lands- severely unsteadily at that as his legs nearly buckle under him. He tries to rebalance himself with his staff, awkwardly with one arm still out of commission. Still, he manages a grin as Codi praises him. So worth it.

"That was my mystic tech."

Codi's wild grin falters briefly as she notes Donatello's less-than-graceful landing. She'd missed a bit of the combat that left him in such a haggard state, but she figures that this is probably a result of a series of standard injures that can be healed easily enough.

"Good shit," Codi nods. "Here, let me fix--fuck!"

She had assumed that the fight with Dendrite was over. She assumed incorrectly. While the pair of rebels congratulated each other, Dendrite had released himself from the hold of his familiar - apparently by almost ripping its lion head clean off, leaving the chimera's limp body lying in the grass in a puddle of its own blood, the snake-headed tail twitching - and, in spite of the huge gash now spread over his abdomen, had already cleared the distance between them in a matter of seconds. His feral howl of fury was the only reason Codi knew to look out for him. She ducks, narrowly avoiding two swipes of Dendrite's fists aimed at her head.

"Ugh--just die!" Codi barks irritably, swinging her rifle in front of her and laying into the trigger, but Dendrite is similarly aware of her tricks at this point. Only a few glancing shots hit, and they all ping uselessly off of his Mage Armor as he rolls out of her way. "Donatello, heal!"

Just like that, the last of Codi's mana seeps away into the Healing Word shot Donnie's way. Alarm flickers in her eyes. Fuck, this isn't good.

Donatello yelps as Dendrite proves not to be down for the count, stumbling to the side as Codi tries to take the mage out. Right, bullets aren't going to work.

Codi's spell sweeps over him like a refreshing wave. Oh, heal as in healing, not- well, whatever. He grabs his staff with both hands, his right still feeling like pins and needles but at least he can move it. Regardless, he's quick to throw himself after Dendrite, calling up his mystic tech to transform the end of his staff into a massive hammerhead. ...a rocket-boosted mystic sledgehammer, an old time favorite of his even before finding out about his ninpo.

"Let's see you absorb this!" he shouts, swinging- if allowed, repeatedly in a flurry of strikes.
maskedtyrant: (Rage | Yelling!!)

[personal profile] maskedtyrant 2023-02-26 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Dendrite does absorb some of those hits. Kind of. The first two whack into his front and rebound in flashes of blue, though still with enough force to push the mage backwards, but the third strike in the same place as the chimera-inflicted gut wound sends spiderwebs through his invisible Mage Armor, accentuated by a spattering of blood. Dendrite coughs and shudders, clearly flagging.

Codi sees her chance. She might not have any more spells, but she still has this very nice gun, so she might as well use it. A spray of bullets aimed at Dendrite's legs force him to dance out of the way. Codi follows him as well as she can with the tip of the gun barrel juddering in front of her face from the recoil - only for it to suddenly go silent and still with one last, hollow click of the trigger.

Out of bullets. Codi snarls in annoyance and chucks the gun at him; this would probably be the better place for Catapult, but she's running on empty now, too. The rifle doesn't even make it close enough to force Dendrite to dodge while he refocuses on Donatello. Three strikes, practiced to the point of being near instinctive, come at him: One jab to the gut, one to his chest, a spin and a kick to his face.

That is...unsettling, really. Not that it keeps Donnie from trying harder. It's easy for him to get a little overzealous when he's swinging around a rocket-powered sledgehammer, but he uses the last swing to tug him out of Dendrite's way once he hears the report of Codi's gunfire.

It's not too hard to guess what had happened as the shots silence, but at least Donatello's been keeping an eye on the mage. The hammerhead's dissipated but the glow of his staff hasn't faded as he spins it to fend off the rush of attacks that fly in his direction. His successful swipe to deflect the first strike leaves him open to the second, which smacks into his plastron hard. It's only barely that he manages to jerk his head aside, Dendrite's foot missing his face by millimeters.

The turtle pivots on his heel as he brings his staff around, not for a full swing, but for a backwards thrust under an arm and behind him in a movement almost like one sheathing their sword. Quicker to direct at the mage without having to wait until he's spun around completely to face Dendrite.

Dendrite, quickly losing blood, probably dazed by the loss of his familiar, and without a weapon of his own, takes Donatello's strike full on again in his shredded stomach. The mage staggers backwards, but he's not done yet. A furious expression darkens his face as he points a finger at Donatello and starts muttering under his breath--

Before he's cut off, suddenly, when Codi wraps an arm around his neck from behind and presses the muzzle of her backup pistol under his chin. No hesitation. There's three quick squeezes of the trigger, two of which Codi sees rebound off of the Mage Armor based on the telltale flashes of blue and a stinging pain in her hand that she assumes is a grazed bullet, but the final one flings Dendrite's head backwards as it breaks through the magical protections at last. His body spasms and Codi lets it drop before it becomes too heavy for her to hold upright.

By the looks of Dendrite's face, Donatello does not want to find out what that spell might do as he catches it from over his shoulder. He's not sure how long it takes or if he can mystic-tech anything in time to counter, but as he turns he finds Codi's there.

He grimaces as she quickly dispatches of the mage point blank, but it's only once Dendite falls lifeless at her feet that Donatello finally lets out a breath. "Nice teamwork," he says with a shaky smile.

Sylphid who have been fighting in the area in hopes of rallying behind one of their mage reinforcements to victory have slowly begun to thin with the vanquishing of the chimera, and now that the mage himself has been taken out, reports are comm'd out and others just flat out run.

Still, there are others that point at the two troublemaking off-worlders, some bolder than others as they make to attack. Donnie's staff blurs in a disc of light as he intercepts a pattering of bullets coming in their direction. "Ugh, take a hint guys!"

Codi nods, staring at Dendrite's body for a few more seconds while she catches her breath to make sure that he isn't getting back up again, before she glances back up with a lopsided, open-mouthed grin in return.

"It was, wasn't it?" she pants, lifting up her pistol to reload it. "We should do this again s--ow, shit."

Codi does not reload her pistol. A spasm of pain rocks through her hand when she tries to move it, and when she inspects the troublesome limb, it becomes obvious that the blood coating her arm isn't just from Dendrite. That wasn't a grazed bullet she felt earlier - one of her own shots appears to have rebounded into her wrist. Her fingers are now locked in a stiff claw around the stock and trigger of her gun, and attempting to move them results in more sharp stabs of agony for her trouble.

This is also around the time they're noticed. "--Seriously!" Codi snarls, scampering into position behind Donatello. She can still reload with her other hand, but it's a tedious and annoyingly painful process. "We need to get out of here. Ideas?"

The sound of Codi in pain gets a concerned look from Donatello. He has absolutely no objections to her taking cover behind him while he tries to keep up his shielding.

"I can take us up- but if I have to hold onto you I can't keep shielding us for long. Better to WIPE THESE GUYS OUT FIRST!"

Cutting off his staff's spin, he whips it around to hold it like autorifle, which...is exactly what that hardlight shapes it into. If the somewhat manic shout doesn't startle the soldiers enough, suddenly finding themselves getting shot at sure does the trick. He's not trying to be precise here, just laying down fire but if he mows down some soldiers in the process then he's not complaining.

"Hang on!" he says as he reaches out for Codi, his battle shell popping its rotors, whirring brilliantly in violet in preparation for takeoff.

A little melodramatic but, again, Codi can't fault the guy for results. She spares a glance out of the corner of her eye to watch where their potential harriers scatter, lets out a huff of amusement, and finishes replacing her new clip with a careful press of her uninjured palm on the bottom of the stock.

"I can provide some suppressive fire," Codi offers, backing herself into Donatello's outstretched arms. She's holding her pistol two-handed now, mostly because she's hoping her mangled dominant hand can still help her aim, even if it can't pull the trigger or brace a shot. "Just try to keep us steady, alright?"

Unfortunately it's not all melodrama and more a taste of Donnie's slightly unhinged side. He does have a strange penchant for violence now and then. The laughter might underline that.

"No promises, I'll take evasive action if we start drawing too much attention," he says as he grabs her and takes off. The lift off is actually quite smooth and fairly quick, not that it stops one or two soldiers from recovering to try firing at them.

"I think we're doing pretty good, they weren't expecting that much resistance against their reinforcements. Guess that much was a given when they only sent three," the turtle observes. The battlefield is thinning out, soldiers retreating and helping who they can to do the same as rebels route them.

Codi doesn't have the opportunity to argue even if she wanted to; getting hoisted into the air from behind isn't anything she's experienced before, and she almost immediately determines that it is not a pleasant experience. Like being the dog in a toddler-carrying-a-puppy-by-the-armpits situation. Codi lets out a hup as the air is squeezed out of her and never quite recovers her breath.

Probably doesn't help that she's getting a little dizzy. And cold. And the pain in her hand is getting quite bad under all that blood, exacerbated by the couple of potshots she takes at the Sylphid below. Codi only manages a few quick pulls of the trigger that all go wild before the recoil kicking her wrist back makes her see stars.

"Yeah! Yeah, doing...great," she says, voice wavering. Her hands tremble as she tries to hold up the pistol again to aim. "Sucks to suck, eh?"

He is most definitely not used to carrying adult passengers, but at least he's strong enough not to let her fall. His battle shell's flight capabilities have been vastly improved over the past two years and even back then it had been able to lift all three of his brothers so Donatello's not worried about clearance.

"-Codi?" He's not nearly so distracted that he doesn't notice that, not at all the tone he's become used to. "Hang on, I think the Witches have set up a treatment site there," he says as he looks towards the area the rebels had overtaken earlier on. His redirection is subtle, the sounds of fighting already fading behind them.

It's not too much longer before he's coming in for a landing, careful in setting down Codi, not letting go in case she ends up not being able to stand. He swallows down the nausea as he sees her bloodied hand. "H-hey, can we get some help here?"
