Mini-Missions with Elma

Who: Elma and OTHERS!
What: Being from a JRPG, Elma must accept All The Sidequests; join her for planning or execution
When: waves hands vaguely at the month
Where: waves hands vaguely at the setting
Content Warnings: None at this time.

I.A. To the Troop (Briefing)

"The Troop is, from what I understand, almost certainly sentient," Elma says, hands resting on the sides of a map that shows the local area and the route to their destination. "'Sapient' is up in the air, but no matter what, we'd be wise to cause as little harm and disruption as possible to avoid retaliation."

Of course, that's good policy for more reasons than just personal safety, but Elma doesn't know how well actual morality and co-existence will play with everyone here. And she has no standing to order or demand such things. Better to stick with rational self-interest, at least at first.

"I'm probably the person best suited to do the actual collection, since I'm likely to be immune to the environmental effects. But I'll need cover while I'm doing it, as well as assistance if it turns out these spores and gases can affect a nanomachine body the way they can a biological one. Assuming wouldn't be wise. Thoughts?"

I.B. To the Troop (Mission Start)

The air seems painfully thick here, something she has to make a conscious effort to ignore. Despite not being a proper Mim, her body still wants to breath -- her subconscious must influence it, keeping it shaped in ways she expects. Not the most comfortable thought, but one for another time.

"If you can hear us, or understand us," she says, loud and clear into the uncomfortable silent Troop, "we don't mean you any harm."

No response forthcomes, not that she expected one to. An obvious sign that they were A-OK in the Troop's books would have been nice, but likely? Not at all. So, with a glance to her partner that asks them to be ready, Elma stretches one arm up to begin scraping the gills of a mushroom spread out just above her head.

II.A. ATV Adventure (Briefing)

"Have you seen the list of potential hazards?" Elma shakes her head, setting down the tablet she'd been reading from. "I'll be honest, I don't see any way we'll get through this without some fighting. For now, I'm thinking overplanning might be to our detriment -- the best we can do is have one of us drive and one of us running active defense and interference. I can do either role, though I might be better in the defense role because of my flexibility."

The more she practices, the more she's getting the hang of this new body of hers. She has yet to explore all its limits, and many of the limits she has found appear to be hers rather than its... but, nonetheless.

"Of course, if you've got a preference, I'm happy to listen."

II.B. ATV Adventure (Mission Start)

"What even is this thing?!" Teeth gritted, Elma braces herself on the back of the heavy cargo container against the bumps and twists of the road, cheating a little with nanite support so she has both hands free to fire at the creature chasing them. To absolutely no avail: bullets just bounce off of its massive skullplate, which shields its whole body as it crashes after them with absolutely no regard for the brush and small trees in its way.

Why are indigens never weak and easy?!

"Can you safely get any more speed?"

III.A. New Arrivals (Briefing)

The map this time is pretty straightforward, detailing the directions to the facility and some potential entrances... and not much else. No details about the interior. No blueprints, just what they can guess or determine from the outside. That's not much to go on, but it's more than she's had a lot of times, when time had been of the essence and all they'd known was where to go and not much else.

"What way in suits you best?"

III.B. New Arrivals (Mission Start)

Welp. Here they are. Trapped behind a reception desk and under fire from the surprisingly excessive security forces. Not unforeseeable, but decidedly unlikely. "The Sylphid either knew we found this place, or increased security universally. Either one's bad news, but the first is... bad."

Elma is much more disturbed by the implications than she is about their position.

"They're going to try to flank us soon. I'll draw their fire, if you can take out enough of them to get us a clear shot further in."

IV.A. Listen All Y'all, It's A Sabotage (Briefing)

This... is what she'd hoped to be avoiding. Not the destruction of the sensor net, she's fine with that, but orders to kill as many Sylphid as possible?

In truth, Elma still isn't entirely certain where her loyalties lie. The Witches Camp has gone out of their way to rescue, shelter, and protect them, yes -- but they've also pointed at the Sylphid and said, "this is your enemy, no quarter asked or given." And that simply can't be true. The overall organization, certainly, might be unremittingly hostile to them, even incompatible with their existence. But can there really be only one side to this story? One truth?

But without further information, or even an idea of how to proceed safely and without endangering others, what choice does she have? Only to do what needs to be done, in order to protect the people who are innocent bystanders dragged into this mess. Some of whom won't appreciate her logic, for a number of reasons.

"I'll handle this one myself. I don't need assistance."

IV.A. Listen All Y'all, It's A Sabotage (Mission Start)

If her body, despite no longer being a Mim, still instinctively wants to behave like one unless she actively thinks about it, then... shouldn't it be able to perform like a Mim in other aspects?

No matter than she didn't have the option of coming alone. She can still handle this.

"I'm finishing this before it starts," Elma says, lifting her twin SMGs as she steps towards the tower. "Cover me."
