"Keese wings!" he says, as he starts putting them into the Slate. All of them. Not all at once - just five at a time, at best - but as Link keeps shoving them in, there doesn't seem to be any point where the Slate won't let him put in any more.

As for why so many? "I've killed lots of keese." And apparently Link just...keeps their wings.
